About Cristina Leon

Cristina Leon As a young girl, I hung out with Great-Grandma, Helen Mae (Enoch) Gleiforst, who was a noted California Impressionist artist, and watched her paint in her studio. She did wonderful landscapes and gardens and florals. Though G-G was certainly an influence in terms of first perking my interest in art, of much greater influence, however, was my mom, also an artist, and the good deal of time I spent hanging out with her in the Santa Barbara City College Art Department. There my mom not only created art but also was a TA for art history and the basic understanding art classes. Often, I’d join her in the slide room where she was pulling slides for her sessions or I’d sit in on them. There I got to look at tons of art on slides and hear about masters such as Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Rothko, Matisse, Henry Moore, and so on and on… Or I’d hang out with Mom in some of her studio art classes, such as painting, life drawing, printmaking... As a familiar face around the art department, I also got to watch other teachers and students in the sculpture and glass-blowing studios… And I was privileged to join my mom on field trips to the LACMA, Norton Simon and Getty Museums… And I’d go to gallery openings… All this means I was constantly exposed to, more like marinated in, art for years. Consequently, somewhere along the line, somehow, all this must have stuck in my head because recently, after a lifetime of thinking otherwise about myself, I was elated to find that I, too, have the creative art gene and drive… I may have come late to making art, but that’s about all I want to do now—just create, make art. Visions of pieces just dance in my head… That beast has been unleashed, and there’s no stuffing it back in the box… As you can see from my work, Impressionism did stick with me a bit, but of much greater impact were the abstract artists, though both things figure in my current works to some degree. So here I am sharing my art with you. I hope you enjoy. ..
